The social model of disability as an oppositional device

This article engages with debates about the UK Disabled People’s Movement’s ‘Big Idea’ – the social model of disability – positioning this as an ‘oppositional device’. This concept is adapted from the work of the art theorist and activist Brian Holmes, elaborated using insights from Foucault and others. The model’s primary operation is introducing contingency into the present, facilitating disabled people’s resistance-practices. We recognise, however, that the device can operate in a disciplinary manner when adopted by a machinery of government. Whilst our primary goal is to understand the character and operation of the social model, by providing a more general definition of an oppositional device as the concrete operation of technologies of power, we also propose a concept potentially useful for the analysis of the resistance-practices of activists involved in a wide variety of struggles. This concept may thus have implications for wider social and political analysis.     

Dancing Ourselves to Death: The Subject of Emma Goldman's Nietzschean Anarchism

Abstract

This article draws together two lively and provocative radical theorists, Emma Goldman and Friedrich Nietzsche, and suggests that a reading at their intersections can inspire political thought, action, and resistance in particular ways. The argument is framed through and productive of a particular archetype which emerges from a reading of these thinkers, that of The Dancer. Both Goldman and Nietzsche have been noted for their affect-laden reflections on dance, as an image of the subject which evades capture within the frameworks of discipline, morality, and ressentiment and which instead commits to a ceaseless and creative insurrection of- and- against the self. Here, I argue that through this image of The Dancer we can conceptualise a form of critical or anarchic subjectivity which can provocatively interpret and inspire radical political action. In the article I look at some of the ways in which dance has formed an important component of radical politics. However I also argue that dance as understood in the terms established through Goldman and Nietzsche moves beyond corporeal performance, indicating a more general ethos of the subject, one of perpetual movement, creativity, and auto-insurrection. I also reflect on the difficulties involved in the idea of ‘self-creation’; as we can see from the more problematic dimensions of Goldman's thought, creation is an ethically and ontologically ambiguous concept which, when affirmed too easily, can serve to mask the subtleties by which relations of domination persist. With this in mind, the article goes on to discuss what it might mean to ‘dance to death’, to negotiate the burden of transvaluation, limitless responsibility, and perpetual struggle which these two thinkers evoke, in the service of a creative and limitless radical political praxis.     

‘Your whole life depends on it’: academic stress and high-stakes testing in Ireland

International research consistently shows that high-stakes exams are a significant source of stress and worry for students within secondary education. Existing research focuses on individual variation in exam-related stress levels among students with very little attention given to the influence of school context on student stress. Using data from the Irish Post-Primary Longitudinal Study, a mixed methods study of secondary students, this paper examines both individual and school level factors influencing the levels of stress among students preparing for the nationally standardised Leaving Certificate examination. The paper presents new findings which highlight the potential role of schools in ameliorating student stress. Findings show that student stress is not only influenced by individual-level factors but that certain aspects of the schooling process impact on stress levels. In particular, the quality of student–teacher interaction and peer relations within the school are found to have a significant impact on student stress levels. Students with more positive interactions with their teachers have lower stress levels with higher stress levels among those who have experienced bullying from peers. Stress is also influenced by programme choice at upper secondary level and the extent to which students are facilitated in their choice of subjects.     

季节性冻土地区保温护道路基温度场数值模拟

研究路基及周围土体温度的分布规律是分析季节性冻土地区路基稳定性的重要基础,结合哈齐客专DK221+150断面3 a的现场监测数据,分析了天然地表及路基不同位置的地温分布规律;建立温度场的仿真模型,研究温度沿深度方向的变化规律;利用实测数据验证模型,分析保温护道高度对路基温度场的影响。现场监测和模拟计算结果表明：护道对路基的边坡下部和坡脚处影响较大,能够有效减小冻深,但对路基中心的温度场影响不大。     

技术抵制的产生及规避对策

技术进步的过程并非一帆风顺,对新技术的抵制与反抗是普遍发生的事实,然而在很大层面上却被忽视了.文章对技术抵制的表象原因与深层原因进行分析,得出结论:技术史并非是充满着一个个革新的胜利;技术史是技术创新与技术抵制的斗争史;技术进步不是帕累托改选的.同时,规避技术抵制的对策有:开放的经济;合理配置政治权力;拓宽科学认知基础.     

“新常态”下祖辈教育状况的调查分析

运用2013年以来在广东经济—社会、人口—家庭等新常态下的4间初级中学的问卷调查等实证材料,从定性和定量的结合中分析了初中生祖辈教育家庭三代人的基本情况、家庭生活环境的基本情况、家庭成员的人际关系、祖辈老人的教育观念、祖辈老人的教育行为,指出祖辈教育越来越成为广东城乡居民家庭生活和家庭教育的"新常态"。应进一步加强这方面的研究和指导,使之与亲子教育水平共同提高,与学校教育、社会教育协调联动,使正能量不断增长。

基于ANSYS的热成形模具结构优化

基于冲压成型工艺试验分析系统,针对模具内材料受热膨胀将对模具导向装置及结构造成干涉的问题,利用有 限元分析软件ANSYS对模内温度场进行热力耦合分析,得出各部分材料的热膨胀程度。为基于正向压边模架的模内加 热装置提供可靠的实验参数和热力学设计依据,提高了模具结构设计的合理性,达到优化设计的目的。     

基于ABAQUS的高速切削锯齿形切屑仿真

为了更好地研究在高速金属切削过程中出现的锯齿形切屑的形成机理,以ABAQUS/Explicit软件为平台,利用 有限元方法对AISI1045的高速切削过程进行了建模与仿真,建立了分离线模型,利用拉格朗日网格划分方法对模型进 行了网格划分,实现了仿真功能,获得了在锯齿形切屑形成的过程中,应力、温度、切削力和总能量随时间变化情况的数 据。在此基础上,以绝热剪切理论为基础分析了锯齿形切屑的形成机理。研究表明,在应力和温度图中,有明显的绝热 剪切带,说明了用绝热剪切理论分析高速切削塑性材料的可行性;锯齿形上升的总能量图说明了加工过程是一个有规律 的振动的过程;切削力的波动图说明了切削振动的频率过大。     

Scientists in the Resistance

In her recent piece, MacKendrick (2017) asks whether we are experiencing a “new wave of science activism” and outlines various visible and vocal forms of political action taken by scientists in recent months. Coming from a slightly different perspective, this piece looks at scientists as part of the broader Resistance—people working individually and in collectivities to challenge the Trump agenda. Building on analysis of data collected from a random sample of participants from the Washington, DC , March for Science, which took place in April 2017, I explore how participants at the March for Science compare to a broader sample of participants in the Resistance. Although they have some unique characteristics, my findings show that there are few statistically significant differences between participants in the March for Science and others participating in the Resistance. I conclude this piece by discussing the implications of these findings on scientists in the Resistance and science activism more generally.
